SAFE was invited to speak to students and faculty about the problems surrounding the trade of illicit antiquities.
The Program of Museum Studies at New York University invited Cindy Ho, President of SAFE, to speak on November 13, 2008 to museum professionals, academics, students, and other invitees about the problems surrounding the trade of illicit antiquities. In addition to the spoken presentation, the Al Jazeera video, “The Art of Deception,” was shown, which tells the tragic story of how the growing demand for Indonesian antiquities caused the disappearance of more than 60% of the collection of Indonesia’s oldest museums. Attendees were also provided time for discussion on important legal and moral issue regarding the control of cultural heritage, and Cindy inspired them to address these problems while we still can.
Afterward, Cindy invited all present to contact SAFE with ideas they have for raising public awareness and creating change.
